Beginners Publications Event

"Beginners" is the original manuscript version of "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love". Raymond Carver received international recognition for his work with the publication of that book. His editor, Gordon Lish, cut the original manuscript by more than half before its publication. The book was dedicated to Tess Gallagher and Carver promised her he would one day republish the stories at full length. "Beginners" restores the seventeen stories to the forms as originally submitted.

Tess Gallagher will be on hand to talk about the publication of the book, perhaps comment on the life and work of Raymond Carver and answer questions.

Kathleen Balducci and John Merton Marrs will present a dramatic reading of "Pie", a short story from the collection, about a drinking man's hapless attempt to maintain a relationship with his estranged wife and family. They performed this reading previously at a second stage production at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse under the direction of Jim Guthrie.

This evening will be an opportunity to recognize Raymond Carver for his accomplishments and literary influence. People from the world over visit Port Angeles to make some connection to Raymond Carver and the town in which he lived and died in 1988.

Marie Marrs has graciously offered to make tiny, little pies to pass out to those in attendance. We thank her for all the work.
